For behind Ruth’s quest there’s a back-story from wartime Germany where pure Aryan maiden Seiglinde, a secretary at a V2 rocket establishment, was co-opted by Oberfuerher Eisendorf for a mysterious project - which has spectacular consequences for contemporary Britain, as well as for Ruth.
